That oval is probably unsafe. A 1.5m drop is not the most graceful end to a sporting area. I bet at least one kid has broken an arm trying to catch a wayward ball. And I suppose I should say something about this new character.

Only a 1.5m drop? At high school it was an 8 foot slope ('slope' is being highly generous, 8 feet up 2 feet out)

My high school had steep slopes like Guesticus describes on the edge of their sports fields too, but the field was at the bottom of the slope, the school at the top. Saved chasing stray balls too far, and probably not a few of the school's windows as well. :P
