Joseph Ouch... Good display of the Inner [self-]Critic. "It's their fault for assuming!" More empathic response: "Yes, it is; and, since I couldn't change others, and I was frustrated at receiving that, I decided to change my appearance -- the tradeoff was worth it, for me; I was tired of suffering." Inner Critic can become even more integrated over time (e.g. with age), if we don't work to transform it / see what's underneath it. It's trying to protect us; doesn't mean we can't reframe its words more objectively/nonviolently.
